The Magic of Weihnachten is an enjoyable novella by Bru Baker. Six months before the story begins, Walsh Brandt accepted a position as a clinical research director for a pharmaceutical research firm. That meant he had to relocate from the United States to Mannheim, Germany. As a result, he’s had to put his social life on hold.Walsh meets Dierck at the beginning of the Weihnachten (Christmas) season. They seem attracted to one another, and they date. They spend their dates, though, mostly attending the Weihnachten festivities. Dierck, while not overly religious, loves the “magic” of the season. Walsh, on the other hand, has no interest in the holidays.
Walsh chafes at Dierck’s refusal to take their relationship beyond hand-holding and kissing. Dierck had a boyfriend for six years, but their breakup a year ago has left him fearful and wary. Walsh hopes Dierck will eventually reward his respectful patience with some of the magic of the season. Bru Baker’s deft telling of her story guarantees the reader will be just as hopeful these two guys won’t throw away the gift life has handed them.

The Magic of Weihnachten edition by Bru Baker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Working in Germany, Walsh anticipates a blissfully quiet Christmas until December rolls around and Weihnachten is in full swing. Hating Christmas, Walsh is beyond disgusted with the sudden explosion of holiday cheer… until he meets Dierck. Dierck makes it his mission to get Walsh to like Weihnachten again but while they’re both attracted to each other, Dierck’s still getting over his last relationship. But as the end of Weihnachten nears, doubts about their relationship plague Walsh and when the time comes will they be more than just a holiday fling?
This was an adorably cute story! I loved that Walsh hated Christmas and that Dierck was so determined to change his mind. As characters, Walsh was more somber and preferred the quiet while Dierck was more outgoing and cheerful. It was interesting to see how Walsh blossomed under Dierck’s attentions and how he grew to enjoy the holiday after everything Dierck did to change his mind.
While I really enjoyed this one, I wish it had been longer. I would have loved to actually see more of Walsh and Dierck on their dates and to experience them getting to know each other instead of being told about it. All the traditions that Dierck dragged Walsh to or did for him, I would have liked to see more of them.
In the end, though, this was a sweet little Christmas story. I loved the German spin to it and being able to learn of the different traditions. I adored the fact that Dierck tried so hard to get Walsh to love the holiday and, as a couple, I found them very cute together. I’m hoping we’ll see more of them one day because I’d be eager to see where they stand in a year or two.
This short Christmas story is set in Germany. One MC is sort of a Scrooge and the other loves Christmas. Walsh is an American who is working over seas in a small town in Germany. He has almost no family and doesn’t particularly like a busy social life. One day on his weekly trip to the shops he’s shocked to see his cozy little town has gone Christmas crazy. The streets are lined with vendors and people milling about. Not much he can do about it so he decides to get his groceries and get out as fast as possible. Walsh decides he can tolerate the crowd long enough to continue his ritual of going to a local pastry shop who makes great coffee. On his way home he’s slammed into by a hunky stranger right from his dreams. Walsh is very attracted to Dierck, the handsome native German, and soon realizes the stranger likes him too. Dierck’s one flaw is he loves the holiday festivities like a big giant kid and wants Walsh to join in the fun.
Dierck was adorable and charming. Big and handsome. He loves Christmas! Maybe it’s the kid in me too but I get so excited about it every year. So I loved him and totally related. Walsh wasn’t so easy to like. He was a sport most of the time but if somebody constantly bahumbugged all over my fun I wouldn’t want to spend Christmas with him. BUT Dierck did and what does Walsh do? Throw a bit pissy tantrum on Christmas eve. I just never really liked the guy. Loved one. Not the other. So no big love for this story sadly. ( And I usually love the reformed Scrooge stories! You could tell this author really wanted the details right and they were. I could see the vision and loved it. Ultimately what I wanted though was to connect with the couple and I just never did.
A bit of Christmas tradition and romance make a nice setting for a Christmas romance. Reasonable character development for a short story.
