Shelby is at it again! Our irrepressible, mind-reading soccer mom is on the loose again, dodging trouble and trying to do what's right. It is hard to believe that this is the 8th book in Colleen Helme's series. It is hard for me to believe that it was 5 years ago when I first started reading Carrots, the first Shelby Nichols adventure outside a grocery store in Miami in the rain. Since then Shelby has traveled the world with me, and I have loved every episode, perhaps each new one more than the last. I loved this one too, and so will you.Shelby is helping lawyer husband Chris solve a murder mystery, that is complex and cloudy. In the midst of that, she is called upon by Blake, from the last book, to whom she has promised a favor. And this seems easy enough, just a few days in Paris, and back home.
But this is Shelby, and NOTHING is ever easy and simple when Shelby is involved. Shelby finds trouble like a Swiffer finds dust!
Colleen did a great job describing Paris, and it really brought back some warm and nostalgic memories for me, both of the things I love about Paris and the things I do not like about Paris. There were good, recognizable and well-painted images of Paris that I really savored. I really liked the play between the characters too, particularly the British secret agent gal living in Paris that gives Shelby and Ramos a hand, and has such fine taste in automobiles and motorbikes!
So once again things have heated up between Ramos, Uncle Joey's faithful hit-man who has fallen for Shelby, and Shelby. Will Shelby maintain her honor and integrity? Will she remain faithful to Chris? Will she be able to still solve the murder case from Paris?
In Devious Minds we have a new wrinkle, too - Shelby can read minds, but she can't understand French, and all the people around her, whether they are French Inspectors or terrorists are speaking in a language she cannot understand! How does she make her gift help? Can she, when she does not know what is going on in their heads? And thwarting terrorists? Oh my!!!
As other books have been, this book has all the elements of a good thrill ride adventure! Fast paced thrills, dodging bullets, complex relationships and personalities, good guys, bad guys, and non-stop edge of your seat action and adventure. I have maintained over these past years that Collen keeps getting better and better in her writing, and that Shelby as a character and as a set of adventures is also maturing. Remember that it's only been about a year in Shelby-Time, whereas in real life several years have now passed. It is quite clear that Collen continues to mature as an author and keeps getting to know Shelby and her world better and better. And we, the readers, reap the benefits of all that.
One or two reviewers have made comments on language in this book, and I want to address the few four letter words that have now emerged in this book. I say right on! I am a former radio and TV host, and I can tell you, there are lots of times when I was thinking things I could not say! Particularly on the air! Of COURSE Shelby is thinking them! Everyone does! But the few times she SAYS them are utterly appropriate, and it is something that I had found lacking previously. To me it just makes her (and others) more real. Colleen does not go into the details of strings of epithets bad guys (or others) are thinking, she just adds a dash of realism to otherwise great reads. So I say right on!
Colleen, you keep writing them, I'll keep reading them, and thank you so much for sharing Shelby and her world with us. I can't take a vacation as often as I need to get away, and Shelby always gives me that opportunity.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of mysteries, adventure, and good writing without hesitation. If you are on the fence, don't be, this book is going to suck you up like Hoover run amok and won't let you go.

I can't believe it's time to leave my new friends. I traveled beside Shelby Nichols who went from housewife to P.I. Never dreamed I'd like a mob boss or have a tiny crush on his bodyguard. Saw Paris through the eyes of Parisians & Americans, wow, did we ever have some adventures. Never had flown on a private jet before only small & commercial planes. That was a bonus. Saw inter workings of a case being tried. I am really going to miss all of this & I can not wait until Colleen Holmes writes a 9th book in this series which I'm so hoping she does. Did I mention all the laughs? You should travel with Shelby & start with book 1.
I love this author!!! I love Shelby Nichols!!!! Never loved a character more than Shelby!
I was so excited when I seen there was a new Shelby Nichols book coming out and even more excited when the author asked me if I wanted to review the audiobook!
It's Shelby in Paris, and if you have read this series then you know it's going to be so much fun and she is going to get herself in so much trouble! )
In the last book Shelby had to make a deal with Blake an FBI agent to help Uncle Joey and that means that if Blake needed her help using her premonitions then she had to do it. She thought Uncle Joey took care of that and hadn't gave him much thought.
Then right in the middle of her husband Chris's big trial where he needed her help, Blake came and said he needed her and that they had to go to Paris. Chris wasn't happy about this as he didn't know about Blake, but when Blake helps him with his case so that he could take Shelby there wasn't much he could do.
Shelby tries getting out of it by telling Uncle Joey, but it didn't work. Though Uncle Joey did send Ramos to help her out and be her bodyguard so Shelby was relieved about that. There is only one problem with Shelby in Paris, she doesn't speak French! Good thing some of them think in English over there as well as speak it but it will make it harder to use her "premonitions".
Not long before Shelby and Blake get there they are attacked and Shelby ends up in Paris alone and scared. So when she finds out Ramos is there she is excited and he is on his way to get her, but before he can she is grabbed. Though she gets away with the help of Ramos, that is the start of all the trouble Shelby gets into.
Their is a terrorist who is threatening Paris with a bomb and only Shelby and her premonitions can help stop it! Paris is in the hands of Shelby Nichols...lol. I don't want to get to much away but if you haven't tried this series you sure are missing out!
The only thing that that makes me unhappy with this series is that I still don't like how close Shelby and Ramos is and how she thinks of him and him her because she is a happily married woman and she shouldn't get so excited to be near Ramos. It just rubs me the wrong way but once I just over look that it's a fun, humorous, cozy mystery.
I love Shelby, she gets herself into trouble but she is getting better at getting herself out of trouble. Chris has come to accept her talent as it is helpful to him as a lawyer and she is learning to put up her shields more around him so she can't hear what he thinks all the time. Ramos is as hot and fun loving as always. We didn't get a lot of Uncle Joey in this one but that was okay.
I can't wait to see what trouble she gets into next time! Read this series!!! Listen to this series! Either way you should try it. )
